Gr 3-6-Favilli and Cavallo only considered strong, determined, pioneering women for inclusion in their bestselling series. Rebel girls from around the globe are highlighted in concise, biographical snippets. The boundaries of achievements are as diverse and wide-ranging as the women who broke them, including politician Suu Kyi, sailor Jessica Watson, tattoo artist Maud Stevens Wagner, spy Policarpa Salavarrieta, astronomer Wang Zhenyi, and orchestra conductor Xian Zhang. The second volume provides 100 new, inspiring stories: volcanologist Katia Krafft, ice diver Johanna Nordblad, photographer Vivian Maier, and astrophysicist Sara Seager. The same fabulous, all-female cast of narrators reads both books and includes Alicia Keys, Ashley Judd, Danai Gurira, Esperanza Spalding, Janeane Garofalo, Mozhan Marno, Phillipa Soo, Rowan Blanchard, and Samira Wiley. A bonus PDF of two written exercises is included in each book. Each story is designed to teach and inspire the next generation to believe in themselves and to begin their own "Once upon a Time" story. VERDICT In addition to being all-around strong selections, these also have potential for research for school biography writing assignments.-Cheryl Preisendorfer, Twinsburg City School District, OH © Copyright 2019.
