Booklist Review
Few things are more heart wrenching than seeing a small child racked with nerves. Meet Noni, a little girl whose worries range from the small (a playdate with a bossy friend) to the large (global warming). For now, the first day of school is what's got her chewing her nails and twirling her hair while her family attempts to assuage her fears. Cote's light but colorful palette switches briefly to cool blue for an emotional two-page flashback: Noni wasn't always so worried about everything, so what happened? Anyway, off to school she goes, and darned it if it doesn't turn out OK she doesn't even spill her juice box when opening it by herself! Hartt-Sussman cleverly shows the parents biting their nails and twirling their hair when Noni returns (so its mimicking the folks is how she got so nervous!) only to discover Noni is just fine: Sheesh! The text is clarity itself, while Cote's rough, splotchy watercolors elicit plenty of emotion from a minimum of strokes. For fearful first-timers, this strikes just the right note of reassurance.--Kraus, Daniel Copyright 2010 Booklist
